It is undeniable how highways have helped mankind advanced in many aspects. In today’s article, we will be listing down some of the longest highways ever created. Most of them are from the United States, but we have added some entries from other locations to make a list a lot more fun!
Pan-American Highway
With a length of approximately 48,000km tops the list for being the longest highway in the world. It stretches throughout the US interstate highway system and is responsible for making a connection with many countries in America. Each ending point of the Pan-American Highway can be found in North and South America, covering an unbelievable length. Since the start of its project in 1923, the Pan-American Highway has been doing a lot of work to fuel America’s economy and transportation.
Highway 1
Australia’s Highway 1 is only second to the Pan-American Highway, with its length of 14,500km. It is also deemed as the longest national highway to ever exist, so you can easily tell how a big deal it is to Australians. Brisbane and Darwin are the only regions that aren’t benefiting from Highway 1; however, there are still some ways to access the highway from these locations. The project was initially proposed back in 1955, but only in 1988 did it reach its final state.
Highway 1 is responsible for carrying approximately 1 million people a day, which is a big deal for Australia’s economy.
Trans-Siberian Highway
For its 11,000 km length, the Trans-Siberian Highway holds the third spot for the longest highway in the world. It is located in Russia, and the point starts from St. Petersburg and extends up to Vladivostok. In its entirety, the Trans-Siberian Highway is also responsible for carrying seven federal highways, making its impact a lot bigger than anyone would’ve thought.
Trans-Canada Highway
The Trans-Canada Highway is only second to Highway 1 for the longest national highway. It boasted a 7,821km length and was started as a project in the 1950s. Construction and polishing of all the works lasted for over two decades, considering how ambitious and grandeur the scale of the project was. The Trans-Canada Highway is responsible for linking all the key cities in Canada, crucial for the country’s advancement in economy and trade.
China National Highway 010
Lastly, we have the China National Highway 010 with 5,700km length. The highway’s starting point is located in Tongjiang City, and it ends in Sanya. China National Highway 010 is important for China because of its scope and how many cities it covers.
So there you have it! These are the fascinating projects that mankind has pulled off. There are many highways that are still existing, and many more that are yet to be conceived, so this list isn’t in any way final yet.
